Dr. Stephen Chan is currently a consultant at the Service-Learning and Leadership Office (SLLO) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He was previously the founding head of the office and an associate professor at the Department of Computing. SLLO coordinates the development and offering of 70 service-learning subjects and numerous projects across the university for 4,500 students each year, with a strong emphasis on international collaboration. Dr. Chan has been involved in setting up and/or leading many projects in Hong Kong, as well as 20+ projects in mainland China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Rwanda, Kyrgyzstan, India, South Africa and Tanzania since 2006. In one continuing project over several years in Rwanda, ~800 households have been provided with electricity generated by solar panel systems. He was given the PolyU President’s Award (Team) in Services in 2008 and 2016 as well as the Hong Kong University Grants Committee Teaching Award (Team) in 2016, together with Dr. Grace Ngai. He has published extensively on research and practices in service-learning. He has also provided training and consultancy to universities across multiple countries.  In 2022 he helped to set up the IARSLCE Asia-Pacific Community of Practice, to foster closer collaboration within the region and linkage to the world-wide community.  Dr. Chan was born and raised in Hong Kong, and subsequently studied and worked in USA (U. of Rochester and U. of Wisconsin-Madison, Electrical Engineering) and Canada (National Research Council, Ottawa) before moving back to Hong Kong.
