This research agenda represents the thoughts, ideas, and perspectives of close to 900 SLCE scholars, practitioners, partners, and researchers from more than 40 countries who volunteered their time to participate in the data collection forums and/or data analysis meetings, all in the service of building a forwarding-looking global research framework to advance the study and practice of service-learning and community engagement across the educational spectrum. However, this research agenda should not be viewed as complete or comprehensive. It is only a snapshot of issues and hopes for future research from those who had the opportunity to voice their perspectives. However, today’s SLCE field extends far and wide and there remain many voices from various regions, contexts, and perspectives that still need to be heard.
While this document presents a research “agenda”, it should not be viewed as a prescription for research or a set plan of action. Rather, this document presents a set of reflections from the field, for the field as we continue to explore ways to conduct more and better research that attends to the emerging forms and practices of SLCE. In this regard, this research agenda is a touch point from which additional perspectives can be explored and other focused "agendas” can be added. The hope is that this agenda will spark further discussion about SLCE research and bring greater awareness of the cultural and regional influences that shape the ways in which SLCE is distinctly practiced and studied in different parts of the world.
